SLC New Colleagues Research Seminar Series

A review of evidence-based practice in Arabic language courses in tertiary contexts

Dr Nadia Selim (Arabic Language and Cultures)

Friday 9 June 2023, 4–5:30pm
Abstract

The presentation will summarize the literature review results that examined evidence-based practices in teaching Arabic within multicultural English-dominant-Arabic-minority (EDAM) tertiary contexts. The search was conducted on Scopus and Web of Science on 09/08/2022, using the keywords “teaching,” “Arabic,” and “university” without time limitations. Only peer-reviewed articles written in English or Arabic were considered. Three eligibility criteria were established: (1) the articles had to focus on teaching or learning Arabic as a language, (2) they needed to present original empirical research conducted in an EDAM tertiary context, or (3) they had to provide structured evaluations of Arabic textbooks or resources used in EDAM tertiary contexts. The systematic process of deletions and examination against criteria left only six articles for analysis. The findings indicate a lack of pedagogically focused research directly applicable to teaching practice and textbook choices in EDAM contexts. In the Australian context, there is a pressing need for contextualized research focused on students’ experiences and evaluations of widely used textbooks.
