Mirrors of Desire: Male Fashion Model Revolution in Post-War Japan

Abstract
Dr Monden talks about his recent research project on the cultural history of male fashion models in Japan, with particular focus on the issues of ethnicity, ageing, and negotiation of post-war ideals of masculinity.
About the speaker
Dr Masafumi Monden is a Lecturer in Japanese Studies. He joined the School of Languages and Cultures in January this year. He completed his PhD at the University of Technology Sydney. Before joining USyd, Dr Monden most recently taught at the University of Western Australia. He writes and teaches on modern Japanese cultural history, fashion, art and popular culture, gender studies, Japanese language, and international relations focusing on Australia’s ties with Asia. Dr Monden is a joint recipient of recent Australia – Japan Foundation Grants for the project titled ‘Festivals of the Fantastic in Australian and Japanese Arts’.
